For this assignment, we will be watching a series of media clips relevant to the controversy surrounding Terri-Lynne McClintic, who was convicted as an accessory in the kidnapping, sexual assault and murder of eight-year old Tori Stafford in 2010.

In 2018, reports that McClintic had been transferred to the Okimaw Ohci Healing Lodge for Indigenous Women in Saskatchewan instigated considerable protests from the wider Canadian public.

This public outrage led to judicial policy changes and McClintic’s transfer back into the Federal penitentiary system.

For this assignment, you will be asked to conduct research on the use of Healing Lodges, critically consider how media narratives surrounding McClintic framed Healing Lodges and reflect on the implications of the policy changes that took effect due to this controversy.

This assignment should be around five pages in length (double-spaced and excluding your cover page and reference page sections).

The paper should consist of the following three sections:

a) One section where you provide an overview of the purpose of Healing Lodges and an overview of how they are designed to assist the rehabilitation of offenders.

This section will require the use of a MINIMUM of two academic resources

b) One section where you apply a minimum of two critical media analysis methods to the news broadcast clips we watched in class to consider how Healing Lodges were framed by these reports. You will be asked to comment as to whether you feel this coverage was balanced or biased and speculate as to the influence these reports might have on public attitudes toward Healing Lodges in Canada.

c) One section where you describe and critically reflect on the policy changes that were undertaken in response to the McClintic controversy. You will be asked to reflect on whether you support or do not support these changes given that they will restrict the ability for other female offenders (who are not McClintc) from accessing services that could assist their rehabilitation.

Your grade will be based on the accuracy, clarity and detail of your analysis, as well as additional requirements including:

a. Proper spelling, grammar and sentence structure;

b. Proper formatting requirements (double-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman font, margins, etc).

c. The correct presence of in-text and reference page citations (format of citations is up to you, but they must be an accredited academic citation style);

d. The presence of a clear and concise hypothesis statement (“this paper will…”)

e. The inclusion of page numbers and section headings;

f. The complete absence of any evidence of plagiarism.
