Destiny of the Republic

Part 1 of Destiny of the Republic

Post Instructions:

Consider the depiction of President Garfield to this point in the novel, and compare and contrast his virtues and vices with one of the convention men: Roscoe Conking, Chester A. Arthur, or James Blaine.

You might choose one or two scenes from the story to demonstrate Garfield’s temperament, and do the same for the peripheral character.

How are they similar and how are they different? What accounts for these differences and similarities?

How is the depiction of each character’s virtues and vices amplified through a comparison to the other?

In short, what can readers understand about each character’s personality, what accounts for his or her temperament, and how can readers better understand each character by analyzing both?

Include quotes from the reading to prove your assertions.

For this assignment, posts should concentrate on the 1st Part of the book only.

Reminder: This post is worth 40 points (almost an entire letter grade) and should be thoughtful and demonstrate that you’ve read and considered the entire first section of the book.

Responses should be at least 3 full paragraphs with plenty of examples and quotes from the reading to demonstrate your ideas and conclusions.
