Assume that your concierge business has been highly successful with lots of great feedback from your employees and customers. You have decided not only to set up franchises across the country, but also license your management software/database to other businesses. Needless to say, this is a big change to your business’ mission, but you are confident in your decision.
Since you are busy with executive decision-making and planning, you will have to hand over the design, expansion, and maintenance of your database software to a new team whom you have hired. Create a cohesive guide for your team that consists of best practices for database administrators. In your guide, address the following:
Naming conventions
How to ensure data reliability
Transaction management and isolation levels
Indexes
Use of triggers
Database security
Database backup and recovery practices.
Avoiding deadlocks
DBA responsibilities
Anything else that you feel in necessary for your DBA team to know
Ensure that your guide is relevant to your specific database and mission. Do not talk about abstract database or data management concepts. Your team can get those from a textbook. How should they take over and manage your database? Also avoid writing in an “essay” style. You are not writing an academic research paper; you are writing a practical guide for your team.
Next, prepare a brief video in which you present your guide to your new team. You can create a summary presentation in PowerPoint (recommended), record a video of yourself, or just speak to highlights while showing off your document itself. It is up to you how you want to best present this information.
To create the video, you may use any program you like, such as freeware like https://screencast-o-matic.com/. Save the video as an mp4 file for uploading to NCUOne. A transcript needs to be included, so it is recommended you prepare that first as your script to use during recording. You may include your transcript as a separate Word file, or as an appendix to your Data Management Guide.
Video Length: minimum of 3 minutes plus written transcript
Database Management Guide Length: 8-10 pages not including title and reference pages
