Presidential Policy Directive 8 (PPD-8) is part of the national preparedness goal and provides a description for preparing for the threats in an all-hazards approach that pose the greatest risk to the United States. Community preparedness is a shared responsibility of the whole community. In addition to the public sector and all levels of government and tribes, the private-sector and nonprofit-sector organizations such as the Red Cross and Salvation Army all contribute to keeping the nation safe. The National Preparedness Goal can only be achieved by focusing on the five key core mission areas, as follows:
- Prevention: Preventing acts of terrorism.
- Protection: Human, physical, and virtual assets must be protected against all threats and hazards to ensure and maintain the safety and security of the homeland.
- Mitigation: Implementing programs that reduce overall consequences such as the loss of life and property by lessening the effect of critical and catastrophic incidents.
- Response: First responders must have the capability and capacity to respond effectively to manage critical incidents to save lives, protect property, and the environment regardless of the incident.
- Recovery: The public sector must work in a collaborative partnership with the private sector to make timely repairs to critical infrastructure such as restoration of power and helping return communities and businesses back to a sense of normalcy and regular operations.
To complete this assignment, refer back to the city or jurisdiction you selected to write about in your Weeks 1 and 2 IPs. Also, use the five previous private-sector organizations you selected in your Week 1 IP. You will write a paper of 800–1,000 words in APA format that includes the following information:
- Identify the top 2 most prevalent natural disaster hazards and the 2 most prevalent man-made hazards or threats for that jurisdiction.
- Describe all 4 threats in detail.
- Define protection, and explain how each of the five private-sector organizations can collaboratively partner with the city to better protect the community from each of the four threats that you profiled.
