When I still worked at the bedside (I am now a Nurse Informaticists as well as an Admissions Coordinator for a local Hospice) I loved telling patients and family members that I didn’t care how they care they received was paid for, I still gave the same level of care whether they paid for it purely with cash, or if the government was footing the bill. It was comforting to me knowing that my level of devotion and care didn’t need to change. However, I now know the impact insurance, or lack thereof, can impact the healthcare industry as a whole.

For example, the article I found mentioned that underinsured individuals can potentially cause a larger public health and policy challenge than those that don’t have any insurance (Link & McKinlay, 2012). One thing that was noted also was the fact that minorities were more likely to be underinsured or not have insurance at all. This will actually impact the system in that down the road, these individuals are less likely to receive primary care, which the study found that these patients have a higher incidence of hypertension and lower quality of life (Link & McKinlay, 2012).
