Through cross-disciplinary research, establish convincing positions drawing on human, historical, economic and technological conditions as they pertain to sustainability in design. Make con- nections across disciplines and independently create wholes out of multiple parts and draw conclusions by combining examples, facts, and theories from more than one field of study or perspective.

Based on a design topic and including references and images, complete a short design research paper. Due to the 1300 word scope of the paper, (do not go under 1300 words! Projects that do not meet min. word count will be severely penalized) topics should be very concise. Papers may go over the minimum word count by a maximum of 100 words. It is an important skill to be able to convey an idea in a predefined word count. Within this research paper, evidence of cross-disciplinary research establishing the topical relevance to sociological, historical, and/or ideological factors should be evident.

A research paper presents ideas or arguments that are the result of scholarly investigation of a particular topic. The research paper should be based on analysis and the writer’s ideas about that topic. Those ideas should be presented as a thesis and supported through references and quotes from expert sources including books, magazines, artworks, images or film. The facts to support your thesis are gathered in such a way that is assumed to be unique. The process of gathering, interpreting, and documenting information is an experience that is the foundation of scholarship. Developing ideas, interpreting disparate sources and drawing conclusions as part of a critical process is the core of developing independent and grounded thinking skills. Clearly communicating ideas discovered is an important and satisfying skill and will prove to be an important asset in your academic and professional careers.

Project Details:

Introduction: An introductory paragraph provides the base information to engage the reader with an essay. The introductory paragraph should also include the thesis statement or main idea. It tells the reader what the writer intends to communicate. The first paragraph typically contains a narrative hook, followed by a sentence that introduces the general theme. The following sentence often narrows the focus of the general theme. The last part of the introduction should also contain a transition to the first paragraph of the body of the paper. An example of how to construct an introduction is:

• A brief introduction concerning the topic and why it is pertinent.

• Your position

• Quotes from leaders on the issue

• Facts to back your position

• Conventions or current practices as related to your position

• Actions to be taken or implications/results of your position

Body:

First paragraph:

The first paragraph of the body should contain the strongest argument, most significant example or an obvious beginning point. The first sentence of this paragraph should relate back to the transition at the end of the introduction. The topic for this paragraph should be in the first or second sentence. This topic should relate to the thesis statement in the introductory paragraph. The end of this paragraph should include a transitional hook to tie into the second paragraph of the body.

Following Paragraphs:

The following paragraphs of the body should contain additional arguments, ideas, examples or an obvious follow up the first paragraph in the body. These should follow in an obvious sequence in time, significance or relationship. Ideas should always make reference to the initial thesis topic from the introduction. The body paragraphs support and development ideas presented or alluded to in the introduction.

Final Paragraph:

The final paragraph should round-out the previous ideas and provide obvious connections in case such are not readily apparent. The last sentence in this paragraph should include a transition that makes the reader aware that the paper is concluding. The transition should lead into the final paragraph.

Conclusion:

Concluding paragraphs:

These paragraphs should include the following:

1. A reference to, or restatement of the thesis stated in the introductory paragraph. Some of the original language should be used.

2. A summary of the main points from the body of the paper.
