Record Sample

Respond to at least two of your peers and share with them how using a functional behavioral assessment along with their chosen observation tool would allow them to better meet the needs of the child they are observing. In addition provide them with an additional developmental domain (i.e., cognitive, physical, etc.) that they might think about using for their observation this week and provide a rationale. 5 sentences or more.

Qualitative Observation Tools- Running Records

Describe and explain characteristics.

A running record is when you write down everything of importance that is being observed as it is happening. The idea is to record as much raw data as possible while using descriptive language and to write down everything that is happening in the order that it happens (McGraw-Hill, n.d.). Although running records can be exhausting and time consuming, it provides a lot of information in great detail.

Discuss whether you will be using this tool to observe social/emotional development, physical development, cognitive development, or language development.

Explain the purpose for using this tool to assess your chosen domain.

Quantitative Observation Tools- Event Sampling

Describe and explain characteristics.

Event sampling is done by counting or tallying every instance of a target behavior that is observed (Howard & Aiken, 2015). With this it is important to observe and record behaviors at the same part of each day because this will ensure the data to be comparable from one observation to the next and this will show patterns on how behavior can change over time.

Discuss whether you will be using this tool to observe social/emotional development, physical development, cognitive development, or language development.

Explain the purpose for using this tool to assess your chosen domain.

Discuss how you will eliminate bias from your observation. Be sure to specifically explain how you will use at least three of the nine strategies that are shared in section 4.1 of the text for eliminating bias from observations.

1.Understanding one’s own prejudices.

2.Being aware of the benefits of antibiased teaching.

3.Comparing children’s behavior objectively to other children.
