Position Statement

The purpose of this position statement is to provide you with an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of meaningful use and the value of HIT tools in your future practice.  Your future practice is in your specialty area…such as Nurse Practitioner, Midwife, Health Administrator, Informatics Specialist or Clinical Nurse Specialist. This short position statement is a response to a request from your supervisor (Clinic Director, CNIO, CNO or Department head).  In this position statement  the supervisor is asking you to write about the value of using HIT tools (electronic documentation, EHRs, decision support tools, etc.) for your colleagues.  She also wants you to talk about any unfulfilled promises you may have read about as you researched this area.  You also want to address how your colleagues can demonstrate they are meaningful users of the technologies. 

The position statement should include:

1. Introduction stating who is your intended audience and what goals are you accomplishing in this guide.  Include any background information that is necessary, for example definitions.
2.  Provide an analysis of the value of HIT, include the current and potential advantages of different technologies as well as any unfulfilled promises—disadvantages or problems.
3. Conclusions and Recommendations about how a specific nursing group can demonstrate being a meaningful user and efficiently and effectively use health IT tools to provide better care, better health at lower costs.
