Using a blend of evidence from course readings and lectures, write a 2–3-page, double-spaced essay responding to one (1) of the following prompts. Answers must conform with the guidelines on the Writing Requirements for History 154 list at the end of this document. Essay answers that do not conform will have a significant reduction to their score.
Essay Question #1: In the early weeks of course, we encountered several instances of Spanish and Mexican officials claiming that Indigenous Californians were incapable of self-rule. Using course readings and lectures, build a case based on evidence debunking these claims.
Essay Question #2: What did the gold rush do to California? What changes did the discovery of gold bring to California? Who benefited? Who was shut out? Using course readings and lectures, answer each of these questions.
