Technology and Globalization

Technology is one of the major influences on the trend toward globalization. Many benefits have come from information technology, such as improved access to healthcare, education, news and media, and government accountability. It has brought people from all over the world closer through social networking sites, blogging, Skype, and other forms of Internet communication. However, there are potential issues and consequences with this. Is this trend yet another one that divides the “haves” from the “have-nots,” by creating a larger digital divide? Will it ultimately hurt developing nations more than it helps them? Will the further development of global financial markets and monetary transactions ultimately lead us to having one large, unified marketplace and currency? What are the possible implications of this? These are all questions to consider as technology rapidly sweeps us in the direction of further globalization.
