The essay checklist much be filled out as well.Utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham once argued that “all punishment is evil” –“evil” being anything people do not want inflicted upon them. According to Bentham, the moral reality of punishment is that punishment is an evil that we intentionally inflict on other human beings. If we try to understand his viewpoint, then how can we justify intentionally inflicting evil upon criminals? What justifications might exist for dealing with criminal offenders in ways other than punishment?
