What have you learned about effective programs and practices? What have you observed? Heard? Read in the research? This week, you will synthesize this learning by writing a paper summarizing your thinking, current research, and your experiences in this course. Additionally, you will include how what you have learned applies to children at specific developmental levels/ages and make recommendations for improved programs and practice.

This Application Assignment is also a Major Assessment for this course.

Your Application Assignment is divided into three parts:

PART 1: INTRODUCTION: QUALITY AND EFFECTIVENESS

  • Explain what the paper is about as a whole
  • Include a definition of quality/effectiveness and its impact on programs and practices. Base your thinking on what you learned during Week 1 of this course as well as subsequent readings and experience
  • Explain your definition of quality/effectiveness as it relates to early childhood programs and practices

PART 2: QUALITY AND EFFECTIVENESS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION CLASSROOM SETTINGS

  • Write a summary, based not only on what you observed in early childhood settings and learned in your interviews but also on the readings and videos that represent current evidence-based thinking with regard to the three factors covered in this course that effect quality/effectiveness in early childhood education programs:
    • Building relationships and partnering with families
    • Child-centered curriculum and the integral role of play and discovery in healthy development and learning
    • Culturally responsive and individually appropriate practice
  • Include specific examples of the ways in which each of these three factors apply to each of the early childhood levels of development: infants/toddlers, preschoolers, and primary-age children. You may use information gleaned from the Learning Resources in the course as well as resources you find on your own.

  • Note: For this section, you are required to cite at least six examples from your school observations and interviews (two related to each factor) to substantiate points you are making in your paper. You must also cite at least three resources either from your coursework or additional resources you have found that are no more than five years old.

PART 3: QUALITY AND EFFECTIVENESS: THE BIGGER PICTURE

  • Reflect on what you have learned about how the ways programs are monitored and standards are used to evaluate program effectiveness and measure children’s learning influence effective programs and practices, and ultimately impact children’s development.
  • Consider the two recommendations outlined by the National Early Childhood Accountability Task Force (2007), which recommend that states should: (1) develop a unified system of early childhood education that includes a single, coherent system of standards, assessments, data, and professional development efforts across all categorical programs and funding streams and (2) align high-quality and comprehensive standards, curriculum, and assessments as a continuum from prekindergarten through grade.
  • Based on your readings and experiences within this course, summarize what you see as the benefits and challenges associated with these recommendations. Include your thinking with regard to the ways these recommendations might contribute to high-quality/effective programming. Conclude with potential benefits in terms of supporting the development of every child between the ages of birth and 8.

A mother brings her 8-year-old child to the clinic, stating the child “just isn’t breathing right, doesn’t want to play, just lies on the couch — this happens all the time.”

The appearance of both mother and child is disheveled. The child’s wheezing can be heard across the room. Journal: Employment Laws’ Impact on Culture

In the Journal you will address how laws you have studied might impact the culture in which you live. Culture in this context refers to beliefs, values, traditions, customs, and practices regarding a particular group based on gender, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, age, religion, disability, etc.

For example: If your family is Lithuanian and you arrived in the U.S. in 1987, you might speak to how the passing of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act influenced you being able to get a steady job regardless of your nationality. You then might summarize how this law improves your ability to improve the society in general and your own future in particular.

Marketing is a very important function with any business and is defined by the American Marketing Association as; “the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large. In laymen’s terms, marketing is everything you do to promote your company’s product and services to potential customers.

Identify a brick-and-mortar retail company that also has a web presence. Describe how this company utilizes the traditional online marketing strategies, social, mobile, and local marketing plan, and how effective you think these efforts are in promoting the business.

The requirements below must be met for your paper to be accepted and graded:

  • Write between 500-750 words (approximately 2-3 pages) using Microsoft Word.
  • Attempt APA style. Use the APA Resources in your course for guidance.
  • Use font size 12 and 1″ margins.
  • Include a cover page and reference page.
  • At least 80% of your paper must be original content/writing.
  • No more than 20% of your content/information may come from references.
  • Use at least two references from outside the course material, preferably from EBSCOhost. The textbook, lectures, and other materials in the course may be used, but are not counted toward the two reference requirement.

Reference material (data, dates, graphs, quotes, paraphrased words, values, etc.) must be identified in the paper and listed on a reference page. Reference material must come from sources such as scholarly journals found in EBSCOhost, online newspapers such as The Wall Street Journal, government websites, etc. Sources such as Wikis, Yahoo Answers, eHow, etc. are not acceptable.

Explain how the Spanish conquest of Mexico set off a series of events that shaped California.  (43)

Comment:  “The Spanish were active in North America for about 250 years before they began to settle the area we now call California.”  (43)

What place did Cortez name “California”?  Why did people think it was an island?  (43)

How did a myth about “California” exist in European literature before any European saw the place?  (44, Selections I and II)

What does the Argüello expedition in 1821 tell us about the cultures he visited?  (46, Selection 9)

By 1821 the Spanish had established 20 missions.  How is it possible that in some native villages nobody had seen a European?

Reading Journal for Early American History

In the journal you will write observations and reflections on your reading in Connecting California.  Please focus on a few documents.  When you mention a document you read, please put the title of the document in bold (or a few words from the title).  You may also comment on parts of our main textbook that you see as related. 

Examine each document critically, and consider how it adds to our understanding of the history.  You may also write your own reflections on what you are learning.

Suggested Journal Prompts (these are just suggestions):

  1. What did you learn from the documents in this section?  What did you find surprising?  How does the material in this chapter relate to what you learned earlier, perhaps in other classes?

Defining and understanding the elements of a group culture is essential to forging a professional identity either online or in person. These elements are important because they reflect how professionals interact, whether online or in person.

In this Assignment, you will write a descriptive report about the industry culture of a group of people within the workplace, preferably your career field industry culture. Please note that this focus should not be on racial or ethnic cultures.

Ethics Bowl: Running Away With the Competition

Objectives:

Analyze a current debate case.

Explain an argument that supports a position for or against the case.

Apply an ethical theory to your argument.

Instructions:

1. Read Case 10: Running Away from the Competition from the 2017 Texas Regional Ethics Bowl Competition.

QUESTION: Should women with elevated levels of testosterone be allowed to compete in women’s events in the Olympics?

Write three- five paragraphs evaluating the ethical issues of the case and arguing FOR or AGAINST a position from the question. Make sure to pick ONE position (for or against), identify the stakeholders, address various ethical issues (e.g., freedom of speech, violation of rights, happiness of society, autonomy, etc.), give at least 1 argument that supports your position, and explain and reply to a possible objection.

FORMAT:

Paragraph 1: Summarize the scenario briefly, focusing on the elements that you will address in your argument and state your thesis (pick a position either FOR or AGAINST)

Paragraph 2: Give one argument that supports the thesis. Remember to explain your argument fully, using examples or scenarios.

Paragraph 3: Give another argument that supports the thesis.

Paragraph 4: Explain a possible objection to the thesis. Reply to that objection.

–Your goal is to give objective arguments to support a thesis.Use the theories that we have studied to support your arguments. One of your arguments must explicitly address one of the ethical theories we covered (Utilitarianism, Deontology, Cultural Relativism, Social contract theory, Egoism, Divine command theory). Think about what Mill or Kant would say.

–Make sure your arguments do not commit any obvious fallacy such as anecdotal evidence, emotional appeal, fallacy of assertion (stating beliefs or opinions), straw man, etc.

–Make sure you give REASONS for the position.

— Explain your arguments fully, using examples or scenarios. Pretend that your reader doesn’t know the case, and does not agree with you. Explain your argument fairly and sufficiently.

–Your last paragraph (or two) should explain a possible objection against your argument, and then explain your reply. Thus, if your thesis is FOR a position, explain an argument AGAINST the position, and reply to that argument.
