Job Applications

Question 1

Goal: The purpose of this assignment is to make sure you have a working resume and a cover letter that will assist in current or future job applications. Once you have a working resume and cover letter on file, you have the opportunity to tailor your resume and letter to individual job postings.

Assignment: This assignment is to acquire the knowledge and skills about different versions of writing a resume and cover letters. For some, you may have a wealth of work experiences where highlighting your job history and work experiences might be easier. For others, it might be harder to formulate a resume and cover letter if you are just fresh out of high school or still in high school with little work experience.   Regardless of your experiences, you have experiences to highlight – paid or non paid experiences.

Resume: Write a functional, combination, or chronological resume describing your current experiences / skills. Refer to page chapter 10, illustrating the different types of resume.

  1. Select a preferred format.
  2. Write your full resume based on your selected format
  3. You may use the resume builder as a tool to help you with this assignment.

Cover letter: A cover letter is one of your most important document to highlight your strengths and experiences. It is a brief introduction to who you are and why you are interested in applying and working in a specific industry. This assignment is to practice the skill of writing a cover letter. Refer to page 244 – 247 in your textbook for samples of cover letters. Use web resources to identify possible positions of interest you would like to apply for and draft a letter in a cover letter format to apply for the position. You may use to look for current job openings to apply for.

Question 2

You will write the Executive Summary section or the beginning of your Strategic Audit Report. The opening section of your audit report can easily be the most important part of the audit, can grab a reader’s attention, and keep it throughout if written correctly; while a poorly written one can leave the reader guessing and confused. So, as you complete this section be descriptive, detailed, and use well-written language.

Complete Your Deliverable

Provided are the guidelines to complete this section:

  • Write a summary of your strategic audit report.
  • This section should be a review of the strategic audit’s findings. It is not to be a history of the firm, or what the firm does (you have already written this in Activity).
  • It should be an overview of what is contained in the Strategic Audit Report and the findings.
  • The Executive Summary is meant to sell your strategic report to your reader.

Submit Your Results

  • This section should be one (1) full page in length.
  • The document should be double-spaced, with sources cited and referenced using current APA formatting, where applicable.

Integration Plan

Your assignment this week is to write a Technology Integration Plan for a classroom. This plan will include how you will integrate the available technology in your classroom for one unit. You have 24 students in your classroom.  You may select the age level and the curricular area for your plan. You may decide to select a cross-curricular project if it fits the situation and the age level of your students.

Available technology in your classroom:

  • 8 computers- all are connected to your network and to the Internet
  • access to a computer lab of 25 computers and a mobile lab of 25 laptops
  • All computers have a basic set of software including what comes preinstalled with the computer and other basics like Microsoft Office and Inspiration.  You can assume all the software from week 6’s assignment is included.
  • Data Projector: mounted and connected to teacher laptop workstation. (The teacher workstation is in addition to the 8 computers.)
  • Wall mounted Interactive White Board (There are several companies that manufacture interactive white boards. If you are not familiar with this device, please visit SMART Technologies or Promethean  for an overview of how they work and the opportunities they offer.)
  • Document Camera
  • Digital Cameras/ Video Cameras- They are multifunction devices that can take photos or videos
  • Printer

Your Technology Integration Plan must include:

  1. Learner Objectives that include measurable outcomes. Please include objectives that go beyond Knowledge acquisition.
  2. Collaboration among the students.
  3. Computers must be included in the lesson. They should be used as a learning tool. The computers should not be used simply to teach a technology skill (i.e. How to use Power Point), although the students may learn a new skill or improve existing skills by completing the lesson.
  4. A minimum of one online resource which you provide for the students.
  5. Instructor or student use of data projector and interactive white board.
  6. A layout of the classroom. This is not intended to be a “fancy” drawing. It can be very simple and easily done in word by using the drawing tools. You can use numbers or symbols to designate where things are located and include a legend for their description. You might think of using Inspiration to draw the layout.  It’s fun to use and you can export the entire drawing into Word! Be sure to include where the teacher workstation is located, the Interactive White Board, 8 student computers, seating for 24 students.
  7. Description of the lesson. This is an important part of your lesson plan. What are the students asked to do? How long is the lesson: 1 hour or 2 weeks? What resources (including worksheets, books, online resources, etc.) are your students using and how?
  8. Evaluation of student learning. How will you evaluate student learning: a written test, performance event, project? Include any written tests or scoring guides you would use.
  9. Standards: Include any local or state curricular standards that are being met through this lesson as well as the ISTE NETS for Students standards. (Most state standards are online and can be found through the state department of education. Many local school district standards are also online for review. For higher ed, use a standard set by your university Look back at the week 1 resources if you need to.)
  10. The additional hardware and software that is available in your classroom may be used in your lesson, but that is up to you. Please be sure to specify if you are incorporating it into your lesson.

Post your assignment to the discussion board by midnight on Friday. There is no peer review required for this assignment.

Hints for Success:

  • Please do not turn in a lesson that you have used in a different class. This should be a new lesson that uses the knowledge and expertise you have gained during this class.
  • There are many excellent online resources and instructional ideas that have been shared throughout the class in our weekly discussion boards and on the Integrating Ed Tech discussion board. Feel free to use any of them in your lesson.
  • You do not have to “re-invent the wheel”. If you find a lesson or webquest online that is appropriate, then use it. It should be timely and appropriate for the class situation you have chosen and you MUST give credit in your report to the creator and the location of the lesson. You will still need to complete the other requirements of the assignment.

Management Function

Operations are an important management function in an organization. The role of operations management changes as companies react to the business environment.

Using the University online library resources and valid Internet sites, search for an organizational chart of a manufacturing, service, or technology company looking specifically for one that shows a change in the operations function. Typically, such charts can be found in published annual reports of public companies.

Based on your analysis of the chart, respond to the following:

  • Review the annual reports over the past three years and see how the operations management function has changed.
  • Examine the financial reports to understand the competitive and market challenges the organization is facing and then analyze the importance of operations in the organization.
  • Explore how the organizational function has evolved to keep pace with the changing competitive and business landscape.

As a part of the disaster recovery planning at a medium -sized business you have been asked to develop a project plan to  test the backups of production objects.

Notes :

Graded Assignments may be found at the end of each chapter of the required textbook under the title “Real-World Exercises”. Each student is to select one exercise (per module exercise) from the grouping as identified below. Provide documented evidence, in Moodle, of completion of the chosen exercise (i.e. provide answers to each of the stated questions). Detailed and significant scholarly answers will be allotted full point value. Incomplete, inaccurate, or inadequate answers will receive less than full credit depending on the answers provided. All submissions need to directed to the appropriate area within Moodle. Late submissions, hardcopy, or email submissions will not be accepted.

Investment Management

In his article “A Lesson on Elementary, Worldly Wisdom as it Relates to Investment Management & Business,” Charles Munger (1995) wrote about tools, techniques, and critical skills that great managers need to develop.

Consider Munger’s thoughts on the importance of mental models. Respond to the following:

  • Examine how Munger’s concept of mental models has changed your ideas of decision making in investment management and business.
  • Explain how this experience has affected your decision-making process.

Regulatory Environment

Instructions and guidelines for student presentations:

There is considerable debate over the role of business regulations in a democratic, capitalistic society. Some argue that regulations level the playing field and lead to a fairer and more efficient market. Others argue that regulations often do more harm than good and that, in general, regulations detract from market efficiencies.

In your paper you need to build a case for one (and only one – you can’t have it both ways) of the positions outlined above. Identify and discuss two or three key banking regulations and use the impact of those regulations to support your position. Below are several questions which should be addressed in your paper.

Presentations should be 3 to 5 pages (double spaced) in length, reference appropriate sources.

The following questions/topics should be covered in your paper:

1. Banking regulations in the United States have generally come in response to economic, social or political upheaval . What were the social, political or economic conditions that were the driving factors for the legislation or regulation cited in your examples?

2. Were there opposing views? Were these views politically motivated? What were the positions that were in dispute? Provide examples.

3. How have the controversies and arguments stayed the same (or changed) over the course of time? Provide specific examples.

4. Have there been any major shifts in attitudes or social conditions that have had an impact on the regulatory environment? Provide examples.

5. Did the regulations make matters better or worse. Describe how things got better or worse.

6. What are your conclusions? What does all of this mean – to you and to our society?

Media Pieces

YMH Boston. (2013c, May 22). Vignette 4 – Introduction to a mental health assessment [Video file].

Note: The approximate length of this media piece is 4 minutes.

Based on the YMH Boston Vignette 4 video, post answers to the following questions:

· What did the practitioner do well?

· In what areas can the practitioner improve?

· At this point in the clinical interview, do you have any compelling concerns? If so, what are they?

· What would be your next question, and why?

Research about   Who is Dave Raggett , and write a 1000 words essay about it. Make sure cite all sources.

A good approach is to open with a statement regarding the topic and your opinion/exposure of the topic from before you did any research. Then identify the reasons this topic is important to this week’s discussion, and if there are any opposing viewpoints. Then conclude with whether your opinion remains the same or has changed and why.

Clinical Employees

Middleville Regional Health Care is one (1) of three (3) hospitals serving a community of 350,000 people. Summary statistics on Middleville and its competitors, from the AHA Guide, are shown below in Table 1. All three organizations are not-for-profit.

Table 1: Middleville, Brierfield, and Greystone Health Care Systems

OP Visits

Expenses (000)

The governing board of Middleville hired a consulting company to evaluate its strategic performance, specifically in the areas of Human Resources, Information Technology, Financing, and Marketing. As part of the consultant’s evaluation, several leaders of Middleville’s units were asked their perspective of the organization’s performance.

You are working for the consultant. Your job is to identify the issues from the response that should be considered further by the consultant team and possibly discussed with the governing board and the CEO. The firm has a rule, “Never offer a criticism or negative finding without suggesting how the client organization can correct it,” so you must indicate what sort of correction you would recommend as part of your list. Because you know there were about two (2) dozen other interviews, you decide you should rank your issues in importance, to make sure the most critical are discussed.

Write a six to eight (6-8) page paper in which you:

  1. Explain the governing board’s role in these strategic initiatives, determining its responsibility and involvement.
  2. Evidence-based management means that operational and strategic decisions are made based upon the evidence that goals and objectives are actually being met. Quantitative measurements must be identified and measured. This data is then used to evaluate the HCO’s performance. Name three (3) performances Middleville can use to measure its success in providing quality healthcare to the community, and identify quantifiable, measureable indicators that can be used to do so. Explain the importance of each performance measurement.
  3. Given the statistics of Middleville and its two (2) competitors provided in Table 1, recommend to the HCO what areas it should focus on to maintain its competitive market share as well as continue to provide healthcare to the community in the 21st century.
  4. Some of Middleville’s Board members are very interested in pursuing advanced technology systems over the next five (5) years, while others are concerned about the enormous expense and need assurance that the investment in technology will be worthwhile. In both monetary and process terms, describe the costs and benefits associated with implementing EMR and associated health data systems. Lay out a plan for how various systems can be implemented.
  5. Middleville has faced many challenges in recruiting and retaining nurses and other clinical employees. The economy has hit the area very hard and budgetary limitations have reduced the amount of money available for salary increases. The Board knows it needs to provide other benefits to their valued employees. Provide at least two (2) suggestions to Human Resources to promote employee satisfaction and, therefore, retain experienced personnel.
  6. Use at least three (3) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.

Relocation Expense

When faced  with a problem, what do you do to solve it? This assignment asks you to  apply a six-step to problem solving process to a specific problem  scenario. You will write a paper that presents a synthesis of your ideas  about solving the problem using this systematic approach. As Voltaire  said, “No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking.”

Choose one  (1) of the problem scenarios as a topic choice for your paper (Note:  Your professor must approve your topic choice before you begin work on  the assignment.)

Scenario  1: You have worked at your company for eleven (11) years. You have  returned to college to earn a Bachelor’s degree in order to increase  your chances for a promotion. You are nearly finished with your degree,  when a supervisor’s position in a competing company becomes available in  another state. The start date is in two (2) weeks, during your final  exam period for your courses. The position offers a $15,000 per year  salary increase, a car allowance, and relocation expenses. Your former  supervisor works for the company and is recommending you for the  position based on your outstanding job performance; if you want the job,  it’s yours. All of the other supervisors at this level in the company  have Master’s degrees, so you know that you would be expected to earn  your Bachelor’s degree and continue on to a Master’s degree. Your  present company offers tuition reimbursement, but the new company does  not.

Scenario  2: Your child comes home from school with an assignment sheet for a  school project. He / she is very excited about the project and begins  work immediately, doing research on the Internet and gathering  materials. You read over the assignment sheet and notice that your child  is not including all of the required items in the project, and you have  some ideas for how to improve the quality of the presentation. You  recently read an article in a parenting magazine about the importance of  a child developing responsibility for his/ her own learning. You recall  the many ways in which your parents took over your school projects.  You, on the other hand, want to encourage your child’s confidence in his  / her ability to complete a project independently. The next day, you  are at the grocery store when you see a parent of a student in your  child’s class. That parent has spent over $30 in supplies for the  science project and is taking a day off of work to put the pieces of the  project together.

Scenario  3: You have two jobs—one during the week from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, and  one on Saturday from 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm. You are taking two classes—one  that meets from 6:00 to 10:00 pm, and one class online. You have two  kids—one who plays soccer, and one who is in band. You have two elderly  parents who no longer drive. You have two siblings—one who lives two (2)  miles away, and one who lives in another state. You have two (2) papers  due in your classes the same week that one (1) of your children has a  soccer tournament, and the other child has a band concert. You are  coaching the soccer team, and you are in charge of fundraising for the  band. You have a goal to complete your degree in two (2) years. Your  doctor tells you that your blood pressure, your cholesterol, and your  weight are too high and recommends several medications that cost you  nearly $200 per month after your insurance co-pay.

Scenario  4: You are a sales representative for a company that encourages staff to  log time in the field and away from the office. You are expected to  begin and end your day at the office. You notice that each day when you  arrive and return another co-worker is already there, and you wonder  whether this person spends most of his / her time at the office. At your  weekly sales meeting, you are informed of your co-workers’ outstanding  sales performance. You suspect that this co-worker is spending more time  flattering the boss instead of working leads in the field, and as a  result is getting the best client referrals. Your own sales numbers have  steadily decreased since this other sales representative was hired.

Scenario 5: Professor’s Choice – problem scenario presented by your professor.

Scenario 6: Student’s Choice – Problem scenario presented by you.

Review the  six-step problem solving process outlined in the webtext, based on the  article “The Problem Solving Process”

  • Step One: Define the problem
  • Step Two: Analyze the problem
  • Step Three: Generate options
  • Step Four: Evaluate options
  • Step Five: Make your decision
  • Step Six: Implement and reflect

Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you:
1. Define the problem in the scenario that you have chosen.
2. Analyze the problem in the scenario.
3. Generate options for solving the problem in the scenario.
4. Evaluate the options for solving the problem.
5. Decide on the best option for solving the problem.
6. Explain how you will implement the decision made and reflect on whether this option was the most effective.

The paper should follow guidelines for clear and organized writing:

  • Include an introductory paragraph and concluding paragraph.
  • Address main ideas in body paragraphs with a topic sentence and supporting sentences.
  • Adhere to standard rules of English grammar, punctuation, mechanics, and spelling.

Merger and Acquisition

Throughout this course, you will review scenarios involving Company A, which has been acquired by Company B. Company A was founded in 1956 in Mobile, Alabama. The average age of its workforce is 57 and it is comprised of 40% Caucasian and 85% male. Company B was founded in 1997 in San Francisco, California. The average age of its workforce is 35 and it is comprised of 45% Caucasian and 50% male.

These two companies have been staunch competitors in the marketplace for several years and the employees of Company A are resentful of integrating with their former rival. There are many strategic and ethical challenges involved in this acquisition. A few of the goals of the acquisition project are listed below:

  • Managing the Communication and Information Sharing:
    • The company wants to keep employees informed of how the acquisition will impact them.
    • The company wants to be sure that they provide enough information to satisfy the employees, but not provide so much that the employees feel overwhelmed.
    • The company wants to be sure that the timing of the communication matches their execution of the changes within the two organizations.

  • Managing the Consolidation and Changes:
    • There is no doubt that there will be layoffs as a result of the acquisition. The company wants to do what is best for the acquisition in a way that inflicts the least amount of harm to the existing employees.
    • The company wants to make the decisions about who to layoff in the fairest way possible.
    • The company wants to try and limit exposure to potential discrimination (age and gender) stemming from the layoffs.

  • Managing the Relocations of Some the Employees:
    • Another impact of acquisitions is that employees may be asked to relocate in order to maintain employment in the newly formed organization.
    • The company wants to manage the expenses and potential disruption with the relocations.
    • The company wants to assess relocations verses hiring new employees locally.

Let us look at the role and responsibilities of HR managers regarding managing the company’s goals related to the recent acquisition.

You have a wide variety of employees encompassing different ages, genders, and ethnic backgrounds represented in these two companies. As a Strategic HR Director, your goal is to create a workforce that will effectively move the newly formed company forward.

Now, address the following issues:

  • Identify all of the information you would need to effectively manage the three goals above.
  • Identify the challenges and potential issues related to implementing the three goals above.
  • Develop recommendations for strategies to address these challenges and help the newly formed company meet its goals.

Write a five-to-seven-page report in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources.
